Event Details
The worlds largest independent Cancer Research Charity will host a GameJam at Google's campus building in East London on the 1st-3rd March, bringing together the charity’s world-leading scientists alongside technology gurus – supported by Amazon, FaceBook and Google –with a diverse mix of developers, coders, gamers, scientists and programmers.
And we need you to come and get involved!
Our groundbreaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer has seen survival rates double in the last 40 years. Our scientists and doctors have contributed to most of the world’s top cancer drugs and our work has far reaching global impact.
Stunning advances in technology means we are facing a deluge of data. To analyse this data it needs human intuition and the human eye. It is analysis that researchers are doing every day; looking for patterns, exceptions and abnormalities.
But with the collective power of hundreds of thousands of people, and their eyes, we could speed up this research by years, and save lives across the globe.
Challenge: We need to create a novel, engaging and scientifically robust way for the wider public to usefully contribute in helping us to accelerate cures for cancers by analsying our data from their mobile. And enjoy doing it.
We believe a GameJam will help us to find the right solution
We have already had success in this field, having launched Cellslider.net in October 2012. We are testing the hypothesis that citizen scientist scoring is as accurate as scoring made by our scientists. Within the first 3 months since the launch of Cell Slider the global public have successfully completed a dataset that would typically have taken 18 months. This is real; and that was Part One.
We'd like you to come to East London for a hack weekender on 1-3 March 2013 to help us with Part Two of our Citizen Science programme.
And we will take forward the best ideas for launch in the summer: your ideas will have a global impact
So what’s happened so far?
To kick things off, the Charity put out a call to their community of 4000 research scientists for ideas with the potential to unlock genuine research bottlenecks and tackle meaningful research challenges
2 different ideas have emerged as briefs for our challenge, with social interaction being firmly at the heart of each...
The full challenge will be revealed on Friday 1st March
Dr. Chris Lintott from The Citizens Science Alliance (of Planethunters fame)will kick off the weekend alongside Amazon, Facebook and Google. Together they will bring the massive expertise and insight they’ve gained from their ground breaking work and be there to help you every step of the way. It's going to be a rapid 48 hour blast of collaborative hacking, making and doing.
What next?
We are seeking a crew of thinkers makers and doers
We need all sorts of diverse experts from different disciplines - web developers, mobile developers, game developers, graphic /user experience designers, social web experts.
There will be prizes, goodie bags, food & drinks all weekend, music, a live science demo. You will be well looked after! For the teams who develop the most awesome creations and functionality they will see their creations go live to the public this year.
Outline Schedule First weekend in March:
Fri 1st March 6.00pm – 9.00 pm Kick off briefing and drinks
Sat 2nd March 9.00am – late Making and Doing
Sun 3rd March 9.00am – late Making/Doing - 5pm Show and Tell and prizes
More details to follow...
